Skin Cancer Reconstruction Overview
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in this country. More than 500,000 new cases are reported each year and the incidence is rising faster than any other type of cancer. While skin cancers can be found on any part of the body, about 80 percent appear on the face, head, or neck and can be disfiguring and/or life threatening.
The goal of skin cancer reconstruction is to rebuild the damaged or removed facial features in a way that restores a more normal facial appearance. There are many surgical options available and Dr. Hoffmann will work closely with you and your dermatologist to determine the best course of treatment.
The Procedure
There are many different techniques used to treat skin cancers. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma skin cancers often require removal of large areas of tissue, which is done prior to reconstructive surgery. It is important to remember that although removal surgeries may leave a patient with functional problems and/or disfigurements, the treatment is life-saving and necessary. Results may leave a small, unsightly scar to extensive and permanent changes in facial structures.
A plastic surgeon is an important part of your treatment team. Reconstructive techniques, ranging from a simple scar revision to a complex transfer of tissue flaps from elsewhere on the body, can often repair damaged tissue, rebuild parts, and restore most patients to an acceptable appearance and body function. Dr. Hoffmann is an expert at reconstructing the defects from skin cancer surgery, restoring the natural contours and coloring to the area removed.
Recovery
Recovery will vary depending on the procedure preformed. You may experience fatigue, bruising, swelling and pain in various intensities. At times, you might also experience emotional highs and lows, which is normal in the recovery process. A solid support network will be very important during your recovery. Dr. Hoffmann will advise you on how to minimize these recovery symptoms based on your individual procedure and physical complaint.
Sometimes more than one surgery will be needed to achieve the best results.
