Nose Reshaping Overview
Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) is one of the most common facial plastic surgeries performed. There are many reasons patients decide to undergo this procedure. It is typically because they would like to change the natural shape of their nose, because of facial injury, or to improve breathing through the nose.
Most patients consider having nose reshaping a big decision and consider it over a period of time. If you are not happy with the way your nose looks and want to have it reshaped to a profile that is more pleasing to your personal taste, the first step is to set up a consultation with Dr. Hoffmann.
The Procedure
The nose reshaping procedure can take one to two hours to complete. It may take longer if reshaping is more extensive or additional procedures are being performed at the same time.
There are two ways to reshape the nose. One, all incisions are made within the nose, or two, incisions are made on the outside leading edge of your nose between your nostrils.
In either case, nose reshaping surgery involves separating the skin from the bone and cartilage that lies beneath the skin. This bone and cartilage is then repositioned to form the new shape and the skin is carefully stitched in place.
Recovery
The first day following your surgery you may experience a puffiness sensation in your face, some aching around your nose and a slight headache. This discomfort is easily controlled with medication. You will be direct to relax in bed and keep your head in a raised position for the first day following surgery.
Remember that in the days immediately following your surgery you will experience swelling and bruising around the eyes. At first it will seem as though these conditions are getting worse, but after about three days they will stabilize and gradually fade. Cool cloths or compresses held gently on these swollen and bruised areas will help you feel more comfortable. You may also have some slight bloody discharge the first days following your procedure, which is completely normal. The area around your nose may remain stiff for several weeks.
Within a couple weeks of your surgery you will begin to feel and look better. You can go back to work as long as it's not strenuous. You should avoid activities that can raise your blood pressure. If you wear glasses, you will need to avoid resting them on the bridge of your nose until there has been adequate healing.

Potential Risks and Complications
There are very few risks associated with nose surgery and the infrequent complications that do arise are easily treated. Scarring is concealed under the nose if the surgery is performed on the outside. Broken blood vessels may cause reddish spots. These are usually minor and unnoticeable.
