Facial Scar Revision Overview
Scars are one of the most sensitive aesthetic concerns people have, particularly facial scars. Facial scarring can be traumatic leading to self-consciousness, low self-esteem and even depression. Thousands of people each year undergo surgical and cosmetic treatment to improve the appearance of facial scarring.
Healing after injury to the skin naturally takes place over a period of many weeks. Complete healing is not achieved until approximately one year after the injury. Ideally, wounds will heal with a reasonably thin line that fades to color of the surrounding tissue. However, this is not always the case.
Facial scarring is frequently considered a cosmetic problem and most facial scarring can be minimized through surgical or non-surgical methods, or a combination of both. Dr. Hoffmann will discuss the different procedures available with you and determine which will achieve the desired results.
The Procedure
Although scars can not be completely removed, surgery can often make them less visible and better camouflaged. The original scar is removed leaving a thinner, less noticeable scar. If the scar lies across the natural skin creases, Dr. Hoffmann may use a procedure called z-plasty to reposition it to run parallel to these lines. This would help make the scar less noticeable.
Severe scarring may require more complex skin grafting or flap surgery. These surgeries are geared more toward improving function to the area and generally take longer to heal. Skin grafting involves the donation of skin from a healthy part of the body to cover the injured area. Scars typically formed at the donor site and are usually minimal and less conspicuous.
Another procedure called microdermabrasion may also be employed to minimize scaring. Microdermabrasion carefully "sands" and smoothes scars allowing them to blend with surrounding skin. For some scarring, Portrait Skin Rejuvenation is another option that can be employed to diminish scar visibility. Dr. Hoffmann with consult with you on the best method for your facial scar minimization.
Recovery
With any kind of scar revision, it's very important to follow your surgeon's instructions after surgery to make sure the wound heals properly. Although you may be up and about very quickly, your surgeon will advise you to gradually resume your normal activities.
As you heal, keep in mind that no scar can be removed completely; the degree of improvement depends on the size and direction of your scar, the nature and quality of your skin and how well you care for the wound after the procedure. If your scar looks worse at first, don't panic—the final results of your surgery may not be apparent for a year or more, but is well worth the wait.
It is important to fully protect your healing skin from the sun with sunscreen and other protective measures.
