Facelift Overview
If you are in your 60s, 50s or even your 40s, you may be noticing some signs of aging. People in their 70s and 80s may also wish to appear more “rested” and youthful. Even if your skin tone is still good, your face may just look “looser”, less firm and older than you would like. A facelift is a procedure that can improve the overall youthfulness and beauty of your face. The first step to a more refreshed and youthful appearance is to set-up a consultation with Dr. Hoffmann.
The Procedure
Each face is unique and so is each facelift surgery. Your facelift procedure will be carefully determined to best suit your own facial dimensions, skin type, bone structure and your personal goals.
Facelift surgery normally takes a few hours to complete and may take longer if more than one procedure is being performed. During surgery, incisions are made around the perimeter of the face, close to the hairline and the front of the ear as well as behind the ear and along the scalp line in the back of the head. In some cases, if the facelift surgery includes tightening the skin under the neck, incisions will be made in the area below the chin. The fatty tissue that has accumulated in particular areas will be removed and a new contour will be shaped. The muscle and tissue under the loosened skin is tightened, then the loosened skin is repositioned and any excess skin is removed. The incisions are closed by stitches and special clips are used to secure the incisions around the scalp line. There will be some scarring, however they will be hidden in your hairline and around your ears.
Recovery
In most cases, there is relatively little discomfort after facelift surgery, and any pain that may occur can be quite effectively managed through prescribed medications. There is often some temporary loss of sensitivity of the skin after surgery, but this normal and diminishes in a short time.
Bandages will be placed after surgery and removed the following day. A light supporting facial wrap will be worn for approximately a week after surgery. Stitches are removed a week later. Special clips placed around your scalp may have to remain in place slightly longer than your stitches as this area may take longer to heal. One of the most important ways to promote the healing process after facelift surgery is to get plenty of rest allowing your body to heal. This rest period should be at least a week after surgery. You will also need to avoid exposure to strong, direct sunlight for a few months.
It takes time for the results of a facelift to become apparent. You may have a feeling of disappointment and even feelings of sadness about the way you look when you first see yourself in the mirror. Your face may look and feel stiff and you may have bruising for a couple of weeks. All of these conditions will gradually disappear and your new, fresh appearance will begin to shine through.
