Ear Reshaping Overview
The most common candidates for ear surgery (otoplasty) are children who have protruding, misshapen, or noticeably prominent ears. Children as young as six may be candidates for surgery, but this type of surgery is also performed on adults who have similar ear problems and want a more natural profile.

If your child is uncomfortable with the look of their ears and is accepting of ear reshaping surgery, it may be an appropriate time to discuss corrective opportunities with them and to schedule a consultation with Dr. Hoffmann.

The Procedure

Ear reshaping surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Typically children undergoing ear reshaping surgery are given a general anesthetic so they are completely asleep during the procedure. In most cases adults will be given a local anesthetic and relaxation sedation for this procedure.

Ear reshaping surgery usually takes about two hours. The procedure involves making small incisions behind the ear and may involve sculpting the cartilage and repositioning the ear closer to the head. Sometimes cartilage is removed. Dr. Hoffmann will discuss different options with you to determine which is best for your child’s needs and desired outcomes.

Recovery
Since the ear reshaping procedure is typically done on an outpatient basis, children and adults are usually up and around within a few hours after surgery.

The patient's head will be wrapped in a bulky bandage immediately following surgery to promote the best molding and healing. The ears may throb or ache a little for a few days, but this can be relieved by medication. Within a few days, the bulky bandages will be replaced by a lighter head dressing similar to a headband.

Potential Risks and Complications
Complications following ear surgery are uncommon and usually minor if they do occur. In rare cases, a patient may develop a blood clot in the area of the surgical incision, which will usually correct itself. Some patients might develop a slight infection in the cartilage. This is treated with medication. Overall, ear reshaping surgery is a relatively risk-free procedure that yields positive physical and emotional results.
